造一寸淨土:寫智海《餘地》
一塊偌大的展牆上,簡單印著一些基本資訊,展題及藝術家的名字特別顯眼,地和海一同出現,文字意象為接下來的圖像閱讀作了微妙鋪墊。拐進一個接近方型的場地,不出十幅小畫以平均的節奏排列在三面白牆上。藝術家雖然身兼漫畫家的身份,但畫作間的句法連結並不強,每幅自足自存,漫畫的意蘊則被轉移到畫中的簡筆,以及對世界的體察之中。
一個有十個凹槽的煙灰缸、出於某些原因不再乘地鐵而改乘巴士的人、車外受到隔擋的正午烈日、困在昏暗機艙內的倦容……畫布上雅麗的筆跡近乎輕不著地,卻隱約承載著某種光怪陸離、為世所逼的沉鬱。如《銀行家》一畫,幾名西裝筆挺的上班族在城市的狹縫裡吞雲吐霧,白煙與背景裡的景物混為一片稍微渾濁的藍;眾人面容憔悴,目光互不相交,且站得疏離,視覺上呈現著現代都市獨有的壓抑。這些怪異、困頓、密集、侷促的景象既是一種城市經驗的觀察,同時亦無不指向畫布以外的脈絡,裹著時代性的意涵。
智海於2018年取得台灣身份證明,正式移居該地,並開始畫油畫。香港和台北,兩者大抵上都是擠迫之城,有著類近的現代化城市景觀,以及令人窒息的亞熱帶空氣。儘管後者似乎仍保有呼吸的縫隙,但在某些意義下,兩者面對同樣的陰霾。作為移民,藝術家經歷到與故鄉(在空間及時間上)的疏離,單是疫情三年,故土的模樣就已經與他記憶中的印象錯開,面目全非,仿如陌生地。(註1)因此這批畫作,與其說是對日常片刻的捕捉和感懷,或是對當下社會現實的反映,不如說是藝術家努力緊握著個人的記憶碎片,並以同質的視覺語彙將兩地景致和生活片段縫合、重疊、貫通,進而具體化鄉愁和傷逝的一次嘗試。
轉往展覽空間的後半,一條長廊在角落伸延,其中兩側佈置著數幅同樣的小畫,盡頭白光閃爍,液晶螢幕放映著藝術家為人熟悉的鉛筆漫畫(實際為連環畫)。此處氛圍顯然開朗得多,《人望高處》、《下一波》及《和平襲擊》一連三幅鋪展出藍綠調的天空和海洋。最直接的理解是,這是一個敘事性的解方:個人將焦點從城市轉移到自然,從壓迫的空間遁逃至開闊的領域,作為物理上和心理上的逃逸。然而細看之下,畫中的天空有烏雲翻滾,海裡激浪亦未見平靜。走到廊道的盡頭,兩份收尾之作更將所有放空的思緒帶回現實。
《文件(2024年5月17日)》以台灣立法院的朝野衝突為題,帶有明確的事件性。作品特意強調人物七歪八倒的姿態,並運用漫畫中常見的手法,將主角郭國文的多個動態凝固在同一幅畫面上,時間在其中停滯、延宕。肢體衝突經常成為媒體鏡頭的焦點,相比新聞畫面的激烈,智海的畫作是較為抽離的沉澱。其中,晃動的柔軟筆觸彷彿喚起了異時異地、似遠若近的歷史片段,散發著某種政治低氣壓下的困倦與無力。
相較於指向特定的時空,錄像作品《灰掐》作為展覽中唯一的漫畫作品,則透過連續的分鏡將同一種無力感投射到跨地域的隱喻之中。「灰掐」在台語中意指「火車」,源於藝術家在2007年改編台灣詩人鴻鴻《旋轉木馬》的同名作品。故事中,角色們被困在一列不斷解離與接合、穿梭於各地方且沒有終站的火車裡,經歷著人際和環境的變化,終日尋尋覓覓。在那個灰白——還未至於完全黑暗的車廂世界裡,人們即使面對失散、遺憾與麻木,仍然迫切地追求著一處安身之所。或許,這份在絕望中奮力掙扎、擇善固執的姿態,才是對抗現實壓抑的真正解法。
在此,「餘地」並非一個光明、具體、固定且不變的地方或歸宿,而是在失落、不斷變動與流轉的光景中,憑個人意志創造出的一寸淨土。亦即是說,正是創作的行動本身,開拓了寶貴的餘地。
