Cuts in Synchronicity: Paintings by Yeung Tong Lung
ACO Art Space presents Yeung Tong Lung’s paintings and sketches made in the past year of 2018. These seemingly realistic paintings show the illusory landscapes assembled through the artist’s re-comprehension, imagination and dissection. Themes of Yeung’s paintings include everyday street scenes, old buildings and homes, transportation, ordinary people, back alleys, parks or plants commonly seen in Hong Kong. He plays with perspectives to construct a delusional 3-Dimensional space, providing multiple viewpoints and subtle hints on sightline movements to guide the audience in and out of his painting scenarios. Yeung’s protagonists are out of realistic proportions at times, yet their gazes are almost interacting with the viewers’. Relatively large, with an average size of 2m x 1.5m, some in groups of 2 or more, Yeung’s paintings create an awe-inspiring experience for their viewers in the midst of his magic realism.
Yeung Tong Lung has been painting for 40 years and more. He has a unique aesthetic and constantly challenges the boundary and essence of medium by experimenting different painting approaches. Apart from the work itself, Yeung’s creation process is also worth studying in depth. He spends long hours sketching, creating various sketches for revisions, displacements and collages. This process helps him understand the relationship between space, time and people, as well as our living condition at the present moment.

About the Artist: Yeung Tong Lung was born in 1956 in Fujian, China and moved to Hong Kong in 1973. He began painting in 1975 and held his first solo exhibition in 1986, and had participated in group exhibitions from 1984 until now. He also works as a mural artist and a set painter for interior designers, photographers and film directors. Yeung's works deal with both the internal and external landscapes and spaces of human being. His works are exhibited in Hong Kong, Beijing, Japan, U.S.A., and Switzerland. His works are collected by the Hong Kong Art Museum, M+ Museum for Visual Culture, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Geneva, and some private collectors. http://yeungtonglung.com
About the Organizer: ACO Art Space at 6/F Foo Tak Building was initiated in early 2018, aiming at creating opportunities for artists to experiment and disseminate their works in a qualitative manner. We hope to strengthen the public's understanding of artists' creative energy, and encourage them to collect local artists' works for enhancing their lives, while supporting the sustainable development of Hong Kong's art ecology. Since 2003, there have been 20 units leased to art and cultural entities at a sponsored rate much lower than the market price through ACO. Just as important, ACO exercises low degree of management to leave more room for self-discipline and trust being exercised by the sponsored art and culture entities, encouraging all kinds of ideas to grow here. We believe that only through art and cultural development can a more diverse and vibrant civil society grow.
